Healthy Weight Loss Revealed
Weight Loss for Men
Weight loss for men has become a big market and rightly so with many baby boomers approaching the age where they need to pay a little bit more attention to their weight. Just like women, as men get older their metabolism slows down and they tend to put on a few pounds. In fact, the amount of calories your body needs tapers off after you are in your mid-20s at a rate of about 2-4% every decade so an average male might have his daily caloric needs reduced by 250 to 300 calories a day.

One of the reasons for this is a reduction in the amount of muscle. Let's face it, as you get older you don't work out as much and it takes a lot of calories to feed your muscles so as to lose muscle mass your body requires fewer calories.

The other thing is that your basal metabolism which is the rate at which your body burns calories for all its necessary functions declines due to hormonal and other natural age related changes. This affects the amount of calories you should consume each day and if your basal metabolic rate goes down you'll need to eat less calories or the excess will be stored as fat.

Another thing that affects weight loss for men is that the thyroid can become less active as well as less efficient as you age. This is true for other glands as well including the adrenal gland and this is actually one of the internal factors which defines biological aging.

Ironically, as you approach midlife when you're need for calories is slowing down you might be tending to eat more. You probably comfortable in your marriage and more financially secure, perhaps going out to more and enjoying a good prime rib more often than in your 20s. So as your caloric needs are going down the amount of calories you are eating is going up which results in excess calories being stored as fat.

But for men, weight loss is as simple as it is for women and is merely a matter of adding more exercise to your routine and eating less. Try to incorporate healthier foods (perhaps the salmon instead of the prime rib) and Philip on fruits and vegetables instead of sugary snacks. Reducing your daily caloric intake by only a couple of hundred calories a day can make a big difference in your weight loss endeavors.

There is no magic formula for weight loss for men, it is the same as it always has been - if you eat more calories than you use you will gain weight. Therefore, your best bet at losing weight is to use more calories by adding exercise, eat less calories in your daily meals or use a combination of both.
