How Fiber Helps With Weight Loss
We all know that fiber is healthy for us, but did you realize that it can actually help you lose weight?

Fiber adds bulk to your food and helps you feel full longer. Not only that, but it helps move the food through your digestive system having an overall cleansing effect on your colon as well as the rest of your body. You can keep you regular and may help reduce your risk of colon cancer.

Insoluble fiber can be found in wheat bran, nuts, vegetables and whole grains and doesn't dissolve readily in water. Soluble fiber does dissolve readily and water. Both types of fiber are beneficial to you and you should be eating enough of each one.

You can find soluble fiber and fruits such as apples, oranges and lemons and also in oats, beans and barley grain. Some studies claim that soluble fiber helps to reduce cholesterol.

But how does fiber help you lose weight?

Foods that have a lot of fiber are bulky. When you hear about "good" carbs and "bad" carbs, the good carbs usually have a lot of fiber. What this means is these foods simply help you feel full longer. They have more nutritional value and satisfy your body better than a candy bar or sugary snack.

Just like everything else, you don't want to overdo it with fiber. An average adult should get about 25 grams per day for women and about 38g per day for men. Of course this depends on your height and weight and how much food you eat these are just general guidelines.

If you want to add more fiber to your diet, consider eating raisin bran cereal in the morning which has 7 g of fiber. This might be a good substitution for that doughnut you currently eat and will do a lot to help in your weight loss efforts. A cup of oatmeal can be very filling and contains 4 g of fiber. For lunch you might add some black beans which contained 7.5 g and a half cup or lima beans that has 7 g in a half cup.

Generally, if you start eating more fruits and vegetables you'll be able to get adequate amounts of fiber in your diet. Plus adding fruits and vegetables, instead of high calorie snacks will help you lose weight too!
